Where to Take Your Ride This July 4th in Houston!

Posted by Anne-Marie Axilrod - 01 July, 2015

Summer is officially here, which means it’s time to cruise around and head to the best events in Houston. The 4th of July has long been a favorite national holiday. It means freedom, friends, family, food and fun. In fact, if you’re looking for the best places to take your ride, here are some Independence Day events you won’t want to miss. Each brings a different flavor, so read carefully before you choose the one (or two) for you.

4th of July Weekend at CityCentre

CityCentre is the hub for shopping, so why not start your weekend perusing the sales? Grab a bite to eat at one of the numerous dining establishments, and then end your night with some tunes or a bang at the fireworks extravaganza. The event is free and takes place over four days. It features music that spans all genres. Highlighted artists include:

  • Thursday July 2nd, 7-10 p.m., R&B – Grady Gaines
  • Friday July 3rd, 7-10 p.m., Country – Texas Unlimited Band
  • Saturday July 4th, 7-11 p.m., Country – Marcus Eldridge Band
  • Sunday July 5th, 5-8 p.m., Rock – Jimmy Buffet-style – The Coconuts

On the 4th, there will also be a fireworks show that starts at 9:30 p.m.  CityCentre is located at 800 Town and Country Boulevard. If you still have energy at the end of the night, make sure to add a late night movie to your list of things to do over 4th of July weekend.

Red, Hot and Blue Festival

Nearby Woodlands has its own major celebration on the Fourth. If you want to drive your ride a little past Houston city limits, this is a good event for you. The festivities are located all over town, and there are plenty to choose from. Some of the components are:

  • Parade – 9-11 a.m. runs along Grogan’s Mill Road, Lake Robbins Drive and Lake Woodlands Drive
  • Free swimming – 12-4 p.m. at community pools
  • Concert in the Park – 5:30 p.m., Live music at Waterway Square
  • The Festival and Fireworks – 6-10 p.m. in Town Green Park

It’s a long day, but a stellar way to spend the holiday.

July 4th Celebration at Bayou Bend

Since this afternoon event is fairly short, it leaves you the opportunity to do other things as well. It’s almost quaint, with the theme being all-things Americana. You’ll experience crafts, activities, performers, refreshments and more. One of the more entertaining aspects is adding your signature to the Declaration of Independence before you leave. It’s a great way to learn a little history while still having a good time.

The event is from 1-5 p.m. at 6003 Memorial Drive. One thing is certain—if you’ve attended this one-of-a-kind celebration, you probably haven’t forgotten it. Admission is free.

2015 Freedom Over Texas

Every year there is one event that outshines them all. While you don’t want to favor it, it’s hard not to—some things are just bigger, better, bolder and done-up in true Texas style. You’ll find bigger names performing, and meet and greets with local sports heroes. The food is classic, and there’s even an adult haven called the Bud Light Lime-A-Rita Beach Party. Performers for this year’s event include:

  • Clint Black
  • Josh Turner
  • Buckwheat Zydeco
  • Ernest Walker
  • Shemekia Copeland
  • and more…

In addition to the fine talent, you’ll find a Kid’s Zone, One of A Kind Zone with dancing and music, rides and games, and of course a huge, dazzling fireworks show to end the evening.

Tickets range $5-10, depending on when and how you purchase them. Kids 5 and under are free. The festival is located at Eleanor Tinsley and Sam Houston Parks along Allen Parkway, and runs from 4-10 p.m. You can park your ride in one of the many available lots or garages.

You have no excuses not to have an excellent 4th of July. Just gas up your automobile, slap on some sunscreen, dress to impress and get out there.
