Lights, Camera, Action: The 4 Coolest Movie Cars

Written by Cory Lowe | Tue, Feb 25, 2014 @ 01:00 PM

The coolest movie cars of all-time take on personas of their own, becoming characters in their own rights. Everyone remembers seeing their favorite movie car for the first time and the excitement generated by these vehicles leaves a long-lasting impression with fans.

1) 1981 DeLorean DMC12

The actual 1981 DeLorean DMC12 can’t travel through time once it reaches a certain speed, but the fictionalized model in the popular “Back to the Future” movie trilogy could thanks to the modifications done by the wild-eyed genius Dr. Brown. The DeLorean was only manufactured and sold for two years in the 1980’s, never finding much commercial success or attention until it was featured in the first “Back to the Future” movie. Over thirty years later, the DeLorean is still immediately recognizable as the time traveling ride of Marty McFly.

2) 1957 Plymouth Fury

John Carpenter’s film adaptations of Stephen King’s breakout novel “Christine” features a 1957 Plymouth Fury that truly has a mind of its own. As the title character in the movie and book, Christine is a murderous possessed car that terrorized both its fictitious victims and the enthralled audiences that made the 1983 horror flick a cult classic. What makes the Plymouth Fury named Christine one of the coolest movie cars of all-time is its ability to play a convincing villain without being an actual actor.

3) 1966 Ford Thunderbird

The movie “Thelma and Louise” made blue 1966 Ford Thunderbird convertibles the iconic symbol of female freedom. A classic muscle car with power and style, the car driven by the film’s leading ladies provides a moving set piece with a sense of adventure. The car itself is cool all on its own and achieves somewhat legendary status through the blockbuster movie. Even though no one can have the light blue Thunderbird driven off a cliff at the end of “Thelma and Louise,” every time the same make and model is seen by fans of the film it reminds them of adventure and the movie’s symbolic ending.

4) 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor

A vintage ambulance was never cooler than the 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor featured in the 1984 movie “Ghostbusters.” The modified Miller-Meteor ambulance featured in the movie was dubbed “Ecto-1” and included a number of upgrades and add-ons necessary to battle spirits all over New York City. The “Ecto-1” remains immediately recognizable, thanks in part to the Ghostbusters logo emblazoned on the side, decades after the film’s original release.

The coolest tv cars and movie cars of all-time do more than provide beloved film characters transportation. They become famous in their own right by adding style, personality, and power to the movies in which they are featured. Although you may not be able to afford one of these cars, the coolest movie cars all have a lasting impact on audiences.
