When you name your company after the most recognizable car in the history of American motoring, people make certain assumptions about what you’ll bring to the car show. The team at CJ Pony Parts has delivered custom builds for the past three years to the tuner epicenter that is SEMA, but for their third installment, they’ve finally had the chance to customize a brand-new, showroom stock example of the car for which they’re named.
Based on a 2017 Mustang EcoBoost, this custom pony is a testament to the potential anyone can unlock from Ford’s attainable and fuel-efficient turbocharged take on the Mustang. Rather than employing pros-only techniques like those used for their 2014 50/30 resto-mod Mustang, the 2016 car showcases just how sweet a ride can be had by making use of offerings available right from the CJ Pony Parts catalog.
The first thing you’ll notice on this car is its custom paintwork. Your eye is immediately drawn to the exterior, refinished in factory Ford Stealth Grey, with black and Acid Green accents. The contrast between the tri-tone color scheme and tasteful carbon fiber bits leaves no doubt this Mustang is looking to the future for inspiration, and the forward thinking doesn’t stop there.
Every aspect of the car has been enhanced thanks to a host of parts from Ford Performance, Cervini’s, Scott Drake and Anderson Composites. Engine output is aided by a cold-air intake, handling is enhanced thanks to a Ford Performance Track Handling Package and these tweaks are supported by upgraded transmission cooling and beefy Brembo brakes.
An extra dose of attitude comes courtesy of a liberal application of Anderson Composites ground effects. The car features black, powder-coated Rotiform wheels and window tint, while lighting and grills all play along to complete the menacing look.
This car has spent some time under the proverbial knife, but what’s so cool about it is that you can apply just about all of the mods seen here to any Mustang without being a professional mechanic. The end result could easily be your daily driver, something you could drive to and from the office, that can still provide an extra shot in the arm when asked to play weekend warrior.
When asked about the experience of developing this latest SEMA car, the CJ crew stressed just how easy it was to develop the car thanks to the quality fitment and intuitive design of the upgrades from Ford Performance and other vendors. Once again, the Mustang displays its versatility as one of the best platforms on the market for customization.
If you missed your flight to Las Vegas, or aren’t yet familiar with the auto parts epic that is SEMA, there’s no shortage of great coverage available online. Not only did the CJ Pony Parts EcoBoost Mustang make a splash on the show floor, but it also earned the attention of top media outlets like MotorTrend and Automobile magazine.
As one of eight Mustangs commissioned by Ford specifically for the show, the team at CJ can take pride in representing the best in American muscle for another year.
