3 Things to Do for Labor Day in the H!

Posted by Shabana Motors - 02 September, 2015

Known as the “workingmen’s holiday”, it’s ironic that too many people will still have to put a shift in this coming Labor Day. However, whether you have to work or not, you’ll still have some free time available Labor Day Weekend—and what better way to fill it than to head to one of H-Town’s sweet celebrations. On Monday September 7th (or the preceding days/nights), take a break from laboring at your job to give yourself the gift of fun-filled free time. Here are three not-to-miss events taking place around Houston this Labor Day Weekend 2015.

Labor Day Classic

There are two words that inspire images of tasty snacks, beer, competition and good times. They are “college” and “football”. There are a couple ways to watching the upcoming Labor Day Classic—either in-person at the BBVA Compass Stadium or at home with friends, family or your favorite crew of co-workers. The game starts Saturday, September 5th at 8 p.m., and tickets range from $20-$53. This year, Texas Southern takes on Prairie View A&M, and although the Tigers have lost cornerback Tray Walker to the Ravens, it still promises to be a thrilling night of wildly cheering fans and rabid team spirit. New talent takes the field, and old rivalries come to a head. Load up on stadium food and beverages for the ultimate sports night that will keep your mind far from work.

Labor Day Rooftop Party

Social Junkie Sports Bar gives you the perfect way to spend your Monday, September 7th. From 12 p.m.-12 a.m. they are hosting a rooftop Labor Day party. The party is free with RSVP, but also has other highlights available. They are:
  • A Madden Tournament – Limited entry, $10. There will be a $300 prize for the winner.
  • Sip and Shop Vendor Booths - $50
  • Table Reservations – Reserve a spot for $50 for your party of 3-10.
There will also be food, music, drink, socializing and plenty of entertainment at this excellent party. Four DJs will be featured throughout the duration, and the party is the perfect opportunity to make new friends. Also note that if you can’t make it to Social Junkie on Monday, they have a pre-labor day soiree on Friday that includes drunken karaoke and an all-day “Do it in the Day” Labor Day Weekend party on Saturday.

Red, White and Blue Affair

Drink Houston is known for its unique setup. A 5-in-1 club, you have your choice of hip-hop, Latin, salsa and dance or a karaoke and sports bar. On Sunday, September 6th, Drink will be hosting a Labor Day extravaganza from 9 a.m. until 2 a.m. The main features are no cover for those who RSVP, drink specials and fantastic DJs that will have you dancing until the wee hours of the morning. Without anywhere to be the next day (hopefully), you can plan to have a good time—just remember to leave your ride at home and take a cab instead.

Although you may want to try one of these three weekend events, there are other things happening around Houston you can attend as well. The fun starts as early as Friday with events like the End of Summer Texas Beach Bash, and the events run all the way through Monday. Other top picks include Saturday at the Hughes Hangar, Impresario Labor Day Party at The Hive and The Capitol Bar Labor Day Sunday Block Party.

The first Monday in September brings about this beloved national holiday. Although historically it was celebrated to honor workers, Labor Day is now looked at as a welcome three-day weekend, a great time to hit the sales, an unofficial end to the summer and a time to live it up in Houston.
