How to Perform a Basic Car Tune Up

Posted by Jeff Martin - 16 October, 2012

Though the term “tune up” may be outdated for the modern car, the routine maintenance it implies is still important to a properly running vehicle. By taking care of the following regular tune up projects you can increase the long term durability of your car.

Spark Plugs

As part of a tune up routine you should check your engine’s spark plugs for signs of wear and tear. Spark plugs are an important component of an engine’s combustion system and should be replaced at regular intervals. Replacement spark plugs should, ideally, be high quality platinum spark plugs. Platinum spark plugs have a longer life span and need to be changed less often.

Motor Oil & Air Filter

Regular checks, additions and changes of your car’s motor oil are a part of a tune up that should never be overlooked. Use the dipstick, which will be clearly marked and easy to find, to determine the level and quality of your current oil. Motor oil should be completely changed every 3,000 miles on average. This will ensure proper lubrication of your engine’s moving parts. While checking your engine’s oil level, take the opportunity to inspect the air filter for excessive debris and dust. Dirty air filters should be replaced.

Fuel Filter

While conducting a routine tune up on your car, check the fuel filter for signs of clogs or age. Cars equipped with a fuel injection system and those without both need to have their fuel filters changed on a regular basis. The fuel filter should be easy to find in the engine, the filter will be clearly labeled. However, if you are having difficulty locating its position, check your car’s owners’ manual for a description of its placement.

Valves

Valve adjustment is less necessary than other tune up projects such as changing the oil and spark plugs unless your car is showing signs of the engine running “rough.” The valves close and open to let air, or air and fuel, into the engine to facilitate combustion. Cars with a hydraulic valve system do not need to have valve adjustments as part of a regular tune up.

By keeping a regular tune up routine you can extend the life of your car and save yourself future repair expenses. Tune up projects can often be performed yourself and knowing how to do so will make the process easier.
