The Most Important Maintenance Tips

The best way to keep your car running well is to keep up with a regular maintenance regimen. Many car owners neglect their vehicles because they believe in the “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” philosophy. Certain maintenance projects should not be ignored, no matter how great your engine is running, or you can wind up needing expensive repairs down the road.

Check the Owners’ Manual

Every car’s owner’s manual includes a recommended maintenance schedule. If you are unsure how often to have different parts of your car serviced, refer to what is indicated in the owners’ manual. There is other helpful and important information in the manual, such as the recommended tire pressure and motor oil grade.

Tire Care

One of the most important components of proper car maintenance is tire care. When tires are ignored, the potential for a dangerous and costly blow out grows. You should check the air pressure in your tires to make sure they aren’t over or under inflated based on the recommended pressure levels listed in your owner’s manual. Also keep an eye out for worn treads and foreign objects puncturing the tires.

Oil Checks & Changes

You should check your engine’s oil levels a couple of times between regular oil changes. This habit can bring to your attention issues which may be causing you to leak or burn through motor oil before the problems escalate. Your car’s owner’s manual will tell you how often your engine will need oil if it is running properly; more frequent additions are a sign of a leak or other malfunction.

Brake Care

The brakes on your car are vital to safe driving. Ask for a visual inspection of your brakes every time you take your car to the mechanic for service. Also, be aware of the warning signs that your brakes are beginning to wear down. These symptoms include slow response times, metallic grinding, squealing sounds and a brake pedal that hits the floor when engaged.

Attention to important regular car maintenance will keep your car running and help you avoid expensive repair work. Never ignore timely care and upkeep of essential vehicle systems and parts.
