You can lower to price of operating and maintaining your car by developing a few conscientious habits. The process of controlling how much money you need to spend on your car’s upkeep requires attention to detail and plenty of forethought but these steps can help you lower the price of vehicle care.

Correct Fuel Grade

High octane premium gas is more expensive but the increased price does not always mean your car is benefiting from it. Most cars do not call for premium gasoline, which has a higher level of octane that allows for increased compression of the fuel. Unless you are experiencing an engine knock or your owner’s manual specifies use of high octane fuel, opt for the less expensive regular gas.

Do Small Repairs Yourself

Small repair and maintenance projects like oil changes are easy to do yourself. By taking on these less complicated tasks without needing a mechanic you save hundreds of dollars a year that would usually be spent on parts and labor. The internet and your car’s owner’s manual contains plenty of helpful how-to steps and information that can assist you in DIY car care, no matter how inexperienced you are.

Check Your Tire Pressure

The air pressure in your tires can vary over time due to temperature changes, driving habits and road conditions. Invest in a tire pressure gauge and check air pressure on a regular basis. Over or under inflated tires can reduce fuel efficiency and force your engine to work harder. Again, your owner’s manual will contain the recommended air pressure for the vehicle’s tires.

Refurbished Parts

In the event that a major part of your car needs to be replaced, find out if using a refurbished secondhand part instead of one that is brand new is an option. Many mechanics have access to refurbished parts which work just as well as one that has never been used. Before choosing to use rebuilt car and engine parts in a repair, make sure it is covered by a warranty.

Controlled Driving Habits

Acceleration and breaking burns fuel and stresses your engine. A habit of controlled and steady driving, including maintaining an even speed as often as possible, increases fuel economy and can save hundreds of dollars a year in engine upkeep.

Attentive and thoughtful car care habits will help keep the cost of operating and maintaining your car to a minimum. These tips and strategies can add up to saving you a lot of money every year.
