Household budgets tend to be tight these days but that doesn't mean that expenses are on hold. Replacing your vehicle's tires may seem like an expense that can be pushed aside for a later date but driving on worn tires can be dangerous. The safer way to save money on tires is to properly maintain your current tires so you can use them longer. These five tips will help you learn how to treat your tires so a new tire purchase doesn't drain your bank account.

Properly inflate your tires

Keeping the air pressure in your tires in the recommended range allows you to enjoy two money saving benefits. First, your fuel efficiency will be boosted, saving you money at the gas pump. Second, tires that are not properly inflated wear faster, meaning that your tires will last longer and you will save yourself the cost of having to replace your tires if you keep them properly inflated. To stay prepared check your air pressure monthly. Include your spare tire when you check air pressure; you don't want to find out your spare is flat when you're facing a roadside emergency.

Rotate your tires

Driving puts more strain on the front tires as opposed to those in the rear, so front tires wear faster. To keep this wear even you should have your tires rotated regularly. You can consult your owner's manual to find out how often you need to rotate your tires.

Say "no" to nitrogen fees

Some dealerships will suggest that you add nitrogen to your tires because it leaks out at a slower rate, and will charge you a fee for the nitrogen. However, studies have found that there is no difference between regular air and nitrogen. Unless the dealership is offering nitrogen free of charge, pass on this.

Save winter tires for the proper season

Winter tires tend to wear faster than other tires, even on dry roads. To avoid this wear wait until winter weather is a reasonable risk to put on your winter tires. When the weather warms up again and the snow and ice are gone take off your winter tires immediately. Faster wear just means more expense.

Compare prices

When you do have to replace your tires don't buy from the first place you shop. Instead, compare prices from several retailers, including online retailers. For the best performance, replace all four of your tires at the same time.
