Summer is a time that many people look forward to across the nation. The weather warms up, school gets out and there is a lot of fun events and gatherings to look forward to. That said, summer weather can take its toll. High temps, precipitation and tropical storms are also a reality of Houston summers. Road trips also take you on heated pavement and through many different, and often heated, conditions. The reality of summer is that your car, truck or SUV takes a beating—which is why prepping it (just like you would for winter) is an excellent idea.

8 Ways to Get Your Used Car Ready for Summer

What do you do to get your vehicle ready for summer? Well, here are eight things you can address:

  • Tires – Your tires are the foundation of your ride. It’s helpful to look at overall condition and take them to your local tire center and have the air checked as well. Have them look for any nails or unwanted items lodged in your tread. Remove winter tires if you have them, and if your tires are in poor condition, consider investing in new ones. You can typically find good deals on a set of tires, and tires are essential to your safety while on the road.
  • BrakesAlthough it’s smart to have your vehicle on a maintenance schedule, most people don’t. One part of the car that should get checked from time to time is your brakes. If you can’t remember the last time you had them looked at, schedule an appointment with your local mechanic. Catching issues before they happen can help alleviate additional costs. Plus, if your mechanic tells you that you’ll need service soon, it will allow you some time to save the money.
  • Deep cleanThe dirt buildup and hot temps are never a good combination. It’s also beneficial to get rid of the grit of winter and pollen of spring. Before June hits, invest in a deep cleaning, or do it yourself. Address all parts of your car: exterior, interior and under the hood.
  • FluidsCheck all your fluid levels before summer kicks off. Fluids to check include brake, oil, power steering, windshield and any other fluids your car uses. Check your manual (or look it up online) to see where each fluid is located and how to check and/or change it.
  • BatteryTake a look at your battery and make sure nothing is leaking and that the fluid levels are okay.
  • Exterior conditionExperts suggest fixing the little things before they become big things. Walk around your car and look for dents, dings, paint scrapes, cracks in lights, if your lights work, window glass and more. Consider fixing the little things so it doesn’t affect your car in the long run.
  • WipersA lot of people don’t realize that there are seasonal wiper choices. Head to an auto store and ask the employees which wipers are best for summer in Houston. Many auto stores will even change them for you. It's a minimum expense that pays off big in visibility.
  • EmergencyYour emergency needs for summer are a little different than winter. You’ll need more fluids, sunscreen and other odds and ends ready to go in case of emergency.

Keeping it Cool

The most important part of summer is your ride’s ability, and your ability, to stay cool. In fact, the number one reason for breakdowns during the summer is overheating. Take some time to check coolant levels and your A/C system. There are a couple ways to do this. First, check your manual to read up on the A/C system. Manufacturers will often have information on when it needs to be serviced, looked at (troubleshooting) or replaced. Have an experienced mechanic look over your system to make sure its operating well. As for the cooling system, periodically check the fluid level, and it should be flushed and replaced every couple of years.

The key to safe summer driving is a car in top hot weather condition. Take the proper steps to ensure your ride is performing its best this summer so you can focus on relaxing and having some fun.
