Places to Take Your Dog in H-Town on National Dog's Day

Posted by Aylin Poulton - 26 August, 2015

Your dog is your best friend—an unfailing companion. Pooches are there for you through good times and bad, and they are faithful no matter what you do. If you have a dog, celebrating National Dog Day is an excellent opportunity to pay him back and say thank you. All you have to do is load your pup in the car, let the breeze flow through his fur and take him to one of H-Town’s excellent spots where man’s best friend is always welcome.

Go for a Drive

Not every dog loves the car, but a large majority does. Many Fido’s and Spot’s crave adventure as much— if not more—than their human counterparts. This coming National Dog Day, pack up some essentials and go somewhere like Brazos Bend State Park. You’ll want the leash when you’re on your walk. Stop for a picnic stocked with gourmet dog treats purchased from Woof Pet Bakery or Woof Gang Bakery

If you have you pet in the car often, there are some helpful safety guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Know your dog – If you have a dog that leaps around the car, prefers to stay on your lap or is likely to lunge for something outside your vehicle, a dog restraint system or crate may be a good choice. However, if your pooch is well-trained and sits in one place happily, he’s most likely okay loose.
  • Consider the impact of airbags – Dogs, like children, aren’t always a good size for airbags. He might do better riding in the back.
  • Trick out your ride canine-style – Think about adding some cool features for your pup. There are harnesses, car seats and barriers that make your vehicle super dog-friendly. Also try seat covers, mud mats and other interior-saving additions.

Play at the Park

Somewhere in history someone realized that dogs need to play. Not only do they enjoy it, but a good romp with friends makes them a better behaved pal. Houston has jumped on the dog park bandwagon and created fantastic green spaces for your furry friend.

One of the top spots is the Johnny Steele Dog Park in Buffalo Bayou. It boasts ponds and shade structures, a dog-washing station and plenty of places to run. It’s the pinnacle of dog parks, a canine gem. However, if you can’t make it there, Houston has other great parks. Try destinations like Maxey Bark and Run Park, TC Jester Bark Park, Tom Bass Regional Dog Park or one of the many others.

Make sure you know the rules and etiquette before you go. Some quick tips include:

  • Dogs must be in view of owners and respond to voice commands.
  • Dogs must be current on vaccinations.
  • Clean up after your pet.
  • Dogs in heat are prohibited.
  • Aggressive dogs must be removed immediately.
  • Have a leash on hand at all times.

Eat Out

Humans often mark special occasions with a meal out. It’s a fun way to spend National Dog Day as well. Many establishments in Houston welcome dogs. Whether you crave a drink, a laid-back meal or fine-dining cuisine, there is something for everyone and their pup.

Head to Lemongrass Cafe for Asian fusion, or the Shady Tavern for an ice cold brew. Other popular spots are Barnaby’s, Antidote Coffee, Bar Boheme, Cottonwood, Happy Fatz, Hugo’s, Natachee’s Supper & Punch and Local Foods. Both Bring Fido and Eater have lists of places in Houston to choose from.

Take a day to honor your dog this August—chances are they deserve it. It’s also a perfect way to discover all the things that make Houston a dog-centric place to live.

If you’re looking for a new ride, Shabana Motors welcomes you and your dog, and we’re ready to get you into a car before National Dog Day.
