There’s a program in Texas causing a buzz in the auto world. The program, AirCheckTexas, was designed to help those who have limited funds to repair or replace their vehicle so it complies with current emission standards. The AirCheckTexas program has certain eligibility requirements, and if you’re looking to replace an older vehicle, you must use a participating dealer. For those interested in having an older vehicle repaired or replaced, read on to find out more about who qualifies and how AirCheckTexas works.

Who is Eligible for AirCheckTexas?

Before you get excited about a voucher toward a repair or replacement, you must first determine if you’re a qualified applicant. Eligibility is based on a few things:

  • Income
  • Vehicle; location, age, gas-powered, failed emissions test within the past 30 days
  • Must be able to purchase vehicle and only use a co-signer if they are within the same household

Income: Income requirements will be based on number of people in the house and how much money you make. See the income requirements to see if you fall within the eligibility range.

Vehicle repair voucher: People who want a vehicle repair voucher must be within a specific county and have been there for at least 12 of the 15 months preceding application. Vouchers are capped at $600, and recipients must pay for the first $30 and anything over $600. The age of the car will affect eligibility, and it must have recently failed an emissions test. You can find out more about vehicle repair vouchers on the AirCheckTexas website.

Vehicle replacement assistance: Those who wish to receive vehicle replacement assistance must be located within specific counties, have a vehicle 10 years or older, must have a vehicle that can drive to a dealership and be gas powered. A further description of replacement assistance requirements can be found here.

Once you’ve determined you’re eligible for the AirCheckTexas program, you can begin the application process. You can find interactive applications in two languages on the H-GAC website. The application can be found in:

Simply follow the instructions and fill out all the correct information. If you need further assistance, or need an alternative to an online application, call the AirCheckTexas program at 832-681-2527 or 1-866-237-9392.

What Kind of Vehicles can you Purchase?

A list of cars, trucks and SUVs is available. If you have been approved, you’ll want to look at the list and find out if the vehicle you’re interested in makes the cut. Approved model years are 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Examples of vehicles you can purchase include everything from Audis and Hondas to Mazda 2s, Dodge Rams and many more.

Vehicles must meet certain criteria, like they can’t cost more than $35,000 before tax, title and license, or $45,000 for a hybrid, electric or natural gas vehicle. The odometer can’t read more than 70,000 and it must meet certain federal standards for “clean” vehicles.

The vouchers are between $3000-3500 depending on what type of vehicle you choose.

Where do you get a Vehicle Repair or Replacement?

The last part you need to know about the AirCheckTexas program is where you can get your current vehicle repaired to meet emission standards, or what dealerships are participating in the AirCheckTexas program. The website has lists available for you to find service providers and dealers.

Texas has made a commitment to assisting vehicle owners repair older cars or replace them so they meet or exceed current emission standards.
